Letter, 27 July 1848, of George Butler, Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, to Elizabeth Palgrave. The letter was forwarded as an enclosure to Elizabeth Palgrave’s letter to John Murray III, 28 July [1848] (folios 52-53). Letters of Francis Palgrave (1788-1861), formerly Cohen, to John Murray II. Shortly before his marriage to Elizabeth Palgrave, on 13 October 1823, Palgrave changed his surname from Cohen to that of the family name of Elizabeth’s mother. Therefore, letters written prior to the change are signed either “Francis Cohen” or under the initials “F.C.” Letters signed “Francis Cohen” or “F.C.” The letters concern various literary matters, including enquiries about and comments on Lord Byron, his character and his poetry.
